Marleene Rubenstein
Marleene Rubenstein worked as an occupational therapist in rehab medicine before going on to earn her MFA from California State University Long Beach in 1999, where she majored in Drawing and Painting. Despite not having a previous background in art, she won the prestigious Marilyn Werby Memorial Award for her studio work and thesis show, as well as first place in the humanities division at CSULB for her paper in art criticism.
Her work has expanded to incorporate installation, book arts and sculpture as well as painting and drawing. It explores elements of fragility, memory and the passage of time, as well as evidencing a strong social conscience. Materials are carefully chosen for their psychological as well as conceptual impact on the viewer. She has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally. Marleene Rubensein lives and works in Los Angeles.
STATEMENT
________________________________________________________________
The injunction to remember is a traditional Jewish responsibility. My work expands this notion, creating a bridge from an intangible past to a contextualized site in the present. Allusions to the state of absence are suggested by my artistic processes of erasure, bandaging, unraveling and the use of discarded possessions. Some pieces assume the role of intervention becoming receptacles for wounding or defacement. Other works interface with the viewer to suggest an ephemeral present through the use of reflection, scent, shadow or subtle movement. My work tends to be uniformly bleached of color, becoming a ghostly presence; and reflecting historically traditional feminine tasks, it is labor intensive. Always present is the knowledge that with the passage of time, individual identity become more eroded and the thread of memory ever more fragile and tenuous.
